Building a Data Strategy for Construction Companies

briq Research · Strategy & Analytics · Oct 2025

A practical framework for construction companies to organize, govern, and leverage their data — the foundation for every AI initiative.

Every AI initiative in construction starts with the same question: do we have the data? The answer is almost always yes — but it's scattered across 15–40 systems, inconsistently coded, and difficult to access.

This report provides a practical framework for building a data strategy that supports AI deployment. It's not about buying a data warehouse or hiring a data science team. It's about organizing what you already have so it can be used effectively.

Step 1: Data inventory. Most construction companies don't know what data they have, where it lives, or who owns it. The inventory process maps every data source — ERP, project management, estimating, field apps, HR, safety — and catalogs what each system contains.

Step 2: Data quality assessment. Not all data is equally useful. The assessment evaluates completeness (are fields populated?), consistency (do codes match across systems?), timeliness (how current is the data?), and accuracy (does it match reality?).

Step 3: Data governance. Who can access what data? Who is responsible for data quality in each system? What happens when systems disagree? Governance doesn't need to be bureaucratic — but it does need to be explicit.

Step 4: Integration architecture. Once you understand your data landscape, you can plan how to connect it. This section outlines integration approaches based on company size, technical maturity, and AI deployment goals.

The report includes self-assessment worksheets, maturity models, and case studies from contractors who built their data strategy before deploying AI — and saw significantly faster time-to-value as a result.
